The Mn Rural Education Association Video (below) breaks down how a new state funding mechanism works to bring cabin and seasonal property tax dollars back to local rural schools. For decades, a portion of property taxes paid on seasonal and recreational properties (like cabins) went directly to the state general fund instead of supporting local school operating costs. This meant year-round residents and local businesses in cabin-heavy regions carried the full weight of voter-approved operating referendums. Created by the legislature to start in 2027, the Seasonal and Recreation Tax Base Replacement Aid shifts how school funding calculations are handled. A portion of the taxes collected from seasonal properties will now flow directly back to school districts that have voter-approved operating referendums.
