Technology Deployment Stage 3 & 4
At the beginning of the school year, our district received notification of one-time Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds for the purpose of creating equity by providing technology to students. We used these funds to purchase and will deploy 1,140 Chromebooks for New London-Spicer students in grades 4 through 12. All New London-Spicer students will be required to use the school issued devices to streamline their student learning experience. We are no longer a “Bring Your Own Device District.” Students in grades K-3 will receive devices at a later date.
The purpose of this communication is to inform our families of stages three and four in our Chromebook deployment process. We are on stage three.
Stage One: Families in Need Receive Temporary Technology Until 1:1 Chromebooks Arrive
Stage Two: Families Review Policies and Tutorials.
Stage Three: Completion of Chromebook Agreement Form, Opt-In Insurance, and Appointment.
Stage Four: 1:1 Device Deployment for All Students 4-12
Stage Five: 1:1 Device Deployment for Students K-3
Prior to receiving a Chromebook, each 4th through 12th grade student in the household must complete each of the following items with a parent or guardian:
- Student and Parent Chromebook Deployment Form By the end of the day on January 15th, 2021.
- Opt-In Insurance Payment via Parent Portal or, if preferred, a written check or cash can be provided to your child(ren)’s building secretary. Insurance per device is $40 with a family cap of $80. Watch this video on how to make a payment using Parent Portal.
- School iPad return and Chromebook deployment. Students that are currently using school iPads must return them at the time of Chromebook deployment.
- A-L students in grades 5-8 will receive devices on January 19 & 20, 2021 while at school.
- M-Z students in grades 5-8 will receive devices on January 21 & 22, 2021 while at school.
- Students in grades 9-12 will receive devices on January 27, 2021. Use this form to schedule your appointment time slot.
- All students in grade 4 will receive devices on January 28 and 29, 2021
Any students absent from school on their scheduled deployment date and those in elected distance learning will receive their devices the week of February 1, 2021.
Here are some of our most frequent questions asked.
Are students in grades 4-12 required to use the school issued Chromebook?
Yes. All New London-Spicer students will be required to use a school issued device to streamline their student learning experience. We are no longer a “Bring Your Own Device District.” Students in grades K-3 will receive devices at a later date if they currently have a school issued iPad they should keep them to use on Check and Connect Wednesdays. Rationale: Using the same device across grade levels will allow for common language and instructions, school management of devices including updates as well as, standardizing of applications and increased teacher oversight.
Do I have to purchase the insurance? Do I have to pay each year?
Our insurance program is optional. If you purchase insurance it will be carried forward from year to year as long as there is no damage. Meaning, it is a one-time $40 per device payment with an $80 per household cap. Insurance payments will be carried forward from year to year as long as there is no missing or damage to the device. No, insurance isn’t a recurring payment. You can read the Opt-In insurance information here.
I purchased insurance on the school issued iPads. Can that money be rolled over to the Chromebook
Yes, the money will be rolled over to the Chromebook, as long as there are no damages to the school issued iPad when it is returned on the day of your child(ren)’s Chromebook pickup.
When do I return the school’s iPad? When can I pick up the Chromebook?
Your child(ren) should keep their school issued iPads until the day they are scheduled to get their Chromebook. K-3 students should keep their school issued iPads until further notice. That way there is no lapse in access to a school issued device. The Chromebook Deployment Schedule is listed in the beginning of this communication.
