NLS EMT Course Continues to Thrive in Sixth Year!

During the 2019-20 school year, New London-Spicer High School launched its first EMT course. The EMT course was designed in a year-round format to allow students to fit it into their regular school schedule. Six years later and the program is still thriving! The course is continually full with approximately 28 students enrolling annually.

NLS EMT course provides a curriculum based on pre-hospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMTs, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, special consideration for working in the pre-hospital setting, and providing patient transportation. All students complete certification in BLS Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. At the end of the course students are given the opportunity to complete the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam.

"To my knowledge, there are seven NLS graduates that are out serving in some capacity in emergency medical services currently," Chad Powers, NLS EMT Instructor, continued, "along with a few EMRs, a few nurses, and a few working towards medical school."

Additionally, this course showcases several of New London-Spicer's six qualities of a Portrait of a Graduate; Problem-Solving, Global Citizenship, Leadership, Perseverance, Communicator, and Responsible. As a district, one of our Strategic Plan goals is to maximize academic achievement in a personalized learning environment resulting in all students graduating career, college, and life ready, which is why the district developed our community’s Portrait of a Graduate.
